Love the Lord Your God with All Your Heart

With All Your Heart: Understanding the Greatest Commandment

In ancient Hebrew thought, the “heart” (lebab) was not just the seat of emotions; it was the center of the human will, intellect, and conscience. To love God with “all your heart” is a call to align your entire inner life with the Divine.

1. The Integration of the Self

Loving with the whole heart means there is no “divided loyalty.” It is an invitation to bring our secret thoughts, our private ambitions, and our deepest fears into the light of God’s love.

  • Intellect: Using our minds to seek truth and wisdom.

  • Emotion: Finding our primary joy and peace in a spiritual connection.

  • Will: Making choices that reflect the character of the Creator.

2. Love as an Action, Not Just a Feeling

In this context, love is a verb. It is expressed through faithfulness. Just as a heart beats rhythmically to sustain life, loving God with the heart involves a steady, rhythmic commitment to:

  • Compassion: Treating others as image-bearers of God.

  • Integrity: Living the same way in the dark as we do in the light.

  • Presence: Carving out time for silence, prayer, and reflection.

3. The Source of the Love

We are often reminded that we love because we were first loved. The “New Life” mentioned in spiritual teachings suggests that our capacity to love God with a whole heart is a gift—a spiritual “heart transplant” where coldness and indifference are replaced with warmth and purpose.
